If you want to know which IT jobs are the most coveted ones in the industry, all you need to do is ask a Dallas technical recruiter.  Most would agree that working at companies like LinkedIn, Google or Facebook rank high on their list of “dream jobs”.  But just being on the cutting edge of technology is no guarantee of happiness on the job.

One Dallas technical recruiter who flies in an out of DFW spoke with me at an airport café about this topic because he knows how many people are desperately seeking employment at these companies.  Things are getting so competitive in this industry that many candidates are willing to relocate almost anywhere to find a job.  For locals in the Dallas area, this is both good and bad news.  Dallas may be at the forefront of U.S. job growth, but this also means more people have the region in their sights for potential employment.

As a Dallas technical recruiter specializing in social media, my friend from DFW airport offered a wealth of information on the top social networks and what they do to attract and retain top talent.  It might require a move to Silicon Valley in order to work at these companies, but this is a small price to pay for the experience.

According to a recent article he wrote for GTN Technical Staffing (“Dallas Technical Recruiter – What Makes an Internet Company Successful?”), this recruiter sees the following characteristics in the most successful internet businesses:

1)      Innovation:  They don’t ignore the need to reinvent themselves on a regular basis.  If you’ve ever noticed how frequently Facebook makes a change to its platform, you will know exactly what I mean.  The product stays fresh and never gets “stale” in the eyes of their consumers.

2)      Fun, Fun, Fun:  This may sound like an excuse to goof off at work, but studies have shown that the more fun people have at work, the more likely they are to take ownership of the job and give back to the company.  Fun work experiences also help with employee retention and overall creativity.

3)      Trust:  More important than most people think, trust is a key to building successful businesses.  When employees sense that their employer doesn’t trust them, they don’t invest much of themselves in the company.

While these characteristics may describe the environment at a social media network, they apply equally well to other IT companies.  If you want to learn more about which companies are worth pursuing on your career path, ask a Dallas technical recruiter.
